CMA/CMR Course Approved by State of Florida

Abita Springs, LA

The BTS Mold Assessor and Mold Remediator Course was recently approved by the State of Florida Mold-Related Services Board for Continuing Education credits, Approved Course #0000001. NORMI, the National Organization of Remediators and Mold Inspectors, became an approved training provider by the State of Florida for both the CILB (Constructon Industry Licensing Board Course Provider #050148598) and the MRS (Mold-Related Services Board Course Provider #0003605)) and is now offering this approved course through its primary training provider, Best Training School.

“This is a big day for NORMI,” reported Doug Hoffman, Executive Director of NORMI. “It appears that we are one of the FEW who have actually been approved by the State of Florida to offer a course that qualifies for CE credits toward licensure and this should give added confidence to those who take this course that we are on the right track. There are a lot of training providers in the marketplace but when a course is vetted and accepted by this board, you have to KNOW that it’s doing the right job.”

Lance Eisen, COO of NORMI, said, “The new State of Florida licensing law requires 14 hours of continuing education every two years to renew your mold assessor and/or mold remediator license. This course provides the needed hours and, more importantly, supports the generally accepted ‘Standards of Practice’ as developed from the IICRC, NYC Guidelines, and EPA. This course is probably the most comprehensive onsite course available in the marketplace and we think the State of Florida is confirming that positioning.”

For more information on this approved course, please go to www.BestTrainingSchool.com or call 888.856.4803 or for more information on NORMI as an approved training provider for your state, please contact NORMI at 877.251.2296 or email support@normi.org

What Training Class Will YOU Choose?

Abita Springs, LA

The Florida Mold Licensing Law is effective NOW! If you are working as a Mold Assessor or Mold Remediator WITHOUT a license, you have been doing so illegically since July 1, 2010 and you need to make application immediately to the Mold-Related Services Board in Tallahassee.

That being said, what is the easiest and best way to apply? Though the Florida Grandfather Clause allows you to provide proof (in the form of customer invoices) that you have been actively working in the mold industry over the last three years, there is an easier way. You could get the training you need (30 hours for the remediator and 60 for the assessor license), become certified as an active member of a nationally recognized organization (like ACAC, NORMI, or another) and take a proctored examination. Best Training School provides the most direct route to accomplish that goal with the CMA/CMR class that specifically fills the bill!

Best Training School is no “newcomer” to the industry. Established to provide effective, detailed, practical and up-to-date training for mold professionals to support the very FIRST mold licensing law established (Louisiana 07/01/2004), Best Training School continues to provide top notch training in both assessment and remediation. In fact we’ve trained thousands of mold professionals in the US, Canada and Europe. It’s NOT about cost, it is about QUALITY! You should select the best, not the cheapest!

There are companies who have sprung up (latecomers to the party) and are teaching their first ONSITE mold classes just to take advantage of the need in the marketplace for training to meet the Florida Licensing Law. They will be through after March 1, 2011 when the grandfather clause goes away. Who is going to continually support you in this ever-changing industry? Who is going to provide you with CE Training EVERY WEEK just to keep you current? Who has ALREADY HAD THEIR EXISTING CMA/CMR CLASS APPROVED by the Mold Related Services Board as a CE Training Provider (NORMI #0003605, Mold Assessment/Remediation Course #0000001) so you can get the 14 hours of training you need every two years for your license renewal? Best Training School, that’s who.

Are you investing in the future of your company or simply trying to get a license the cheapest and easiest way possible? We believe your customers can tell the difference and we also know that the highest quality training (THREE+ TRAINERS AT EACH CLASS) will come from Best Training School. This isn’t something where you should cut corners. Take advantage of the option you have to be the best you can be and improve the mold industry by being the professional your clients deserve.

Register today for Orlando, Ft. Myers, or Pensacola and get licensed. It couldn’t be easier than now…but seating is limited!

Lead RRP Class NOW SCHEDULED in Harleysville, PA

Abita Springs, LA

The new EPA Regulations go into effect January 1, 2011 when all contractors, remodelers, inspectors or other professionals who work on pre-1978 homes must be trained and certified in lead inspection and removal. Non-compliance could result in a fine of up to $37,500 by the EPA.

In an effort to help expedite the training process, LaVerne Scheetz, Principal Course Instructor for the NORMI/EPA Lead RRP program has been scheduled for a class in Harleysville, PA on Friday, December 10, 2010. This class meets all the EPA regulations and offers a dual certification which includes the EPA and NORMI certification for Lead RRP.

“As an approved training provider”, said Doug Hoffman, Executive Director of NORMI, the National Organization of Remediators and Mold Inspectors, “we have been moving across the country providing this training to construction professionals. Our intention is to continue teaching this program and the subsequent refresher courses so that no professional will be ‘caught’ in non-compliance. The public needs to know about this requirement and it looks like the EPA is relying on the trained professional to pass along the proper information.”

LaVerne Scheetz was certified by NORMI as a NORMI/EPA Lead RRP Principal Course Instructor in August of this year and has taught in Pennsylvania and Florida. Her credentials make her highly qualified to conduct this course and she makes the otherwise dull course interesting and relevant.

NORMI Reviews “Mold-The War Within”

Abita Springs, LA 11/05/10

Subtitled Lessons Learned from Katrina, this book peaked my interest from the onset because we, too, were in the midst of the toxic mold problems that resulted from the most devastating hurricane ever to hit southeastern Louisiana. NORMI, the National Organization of Remediators and Mold Inspectors, www.NORMI.org, was formed in July of 2004 just one year before Hurricane Katrina hit and, because we had been training on mold assessment, remediation, and the health issues related to this biological contaminant already in place, we were right here poised to help hundreds, maybe thousands, of people with resources and information that was accurate and timely. Some of our efforts have been archived at www.YouTube.com/NORMIPro

“Mold: The War Within” could have been one of the most valuable resources a homeowner could have in the midst of the damage from Katrina but it took this natural disaster and the personal struggles of Kurt and Lee Ann Billings to become the basis for this incredible resource. There is no doubt that the generations that follow will now have a comprehensive understanding of how mold and other biological contaminants could change their lives forever.

I was excited to receive and read this book. As a mold professional specializing in creating healthier environments, I have been interested in the short and long-term effects of mold and their myco-toxins on normal, healthy people. For years we have known that immune-compromised individuals, pregnant women and young children have been especially susceptible to the ill-effects of toxic mold exposures but Kurt and Lee Ann have put the spotlight on the real dangers that can affect the average, otherwise healthy, person. It’s not just awareness of the health issues that was so insightful but their straight-forward approach to develop a road map, a path to run on, for people who have had nowhere to turn for answers. Some people don’t even know the right questions to ask and this book is a great starting place for them, too.

Dr. Doris Rapp, my good friend and who has been a pioneer in this field for years, wrote the forward. As a Board Certified Pediatric Physician and NY Best Selling Author (“Is This Your Child” and “Our Toxic World”) Dr. Rapp lends credibility to the Billings’ approach and, by endorsement, invites them onto a team of professionals who are finally focusing on these serious, life-changing issues. Any parent who has found little help in the current medical industry, should take seriously the cries of people like Rapp and Billings. As Dr. Rapp concluded, “Too many people continue to hope for our government to take appropriate and responsible action for what has turned their lives and health upside down.” And the public continues to wait.

It is obvious that Kurt and Lee Ann spent countless hours investigating and studying the mycology of mold, the testing process, the interpretation of lab reports and the scientific data that supports their conclusions. Why were they so interested in this subject—because they themselves experienced the devastating effects of toxic molds and their myco-toxins. As a “victim” of the bureaucracies, ill-informed medical community and confusing, sometimes contradictory, regulations, Kurt and Lee Ann waded through the mire of information and emerged with a clear, comprehensive understanding of the problem and solution. They have unselfishly shared this information through their book and are probably unaware of the thousands of people they have helped through this effort.

Traditional medicine seems to close its eyes, psychologists imagine psychosis and health officials continue to compile study after study while they ignore the “here and now”. To add insult to injury, the evaluation of indoor environments process has been fiercely protected territory for some “professionals” who have made it virtually impossible for a homeowner to afford assessment. NORMI has taken the ball to develop trainings and do-it-yourself programs that will assist the homeowner to begin the evaluation process in an inexpensive way through www.BestTrainingSchool.com. Once assessed, toxic mold and other biological problems can be managed and that process often results in an improvement to the quality of life indoors.

I am proud to recommend this incredible book to our readers and members. “Mold: The War Within” is available through many book outlets including www.BestLivingSystems.com and is a “must read” for anyone who is seeking answers to questions regarding molds and their devastating effects. A great big “Thank You” to Kurt and Lee Ann Billings for carving out the time to make this book possible.

Chinese/Contaminated Drywall Fix Unveiled–Remediate Correctly!

REPRINT from News Press, Ft. Myers, FL (Dick Hogan)

A national mold remediation trade organization was in Fort Myers on Thursday demonstrating a Chinese drywall fix that carries a 10-year warranty and follow-up visits to ensure the hardy bacteria that cause air quality problems are gone for good.

The drywall, imported from China mostly between 2004 and 2008, emits sulfur compounds that corrode air conditioning coils, electrical wiring and numerous other metal items. Residents claim health symptoms ranging from nosebleeds to respiratory problems.

Almost 1,400 Lee County homeowners have reported to the property appraiser’s office that they have defective drywall.

Experts disagree on exactly what causes it, but many builders remove the drywall, strip a house down to the studs and use a powerful vacuum to get rid of any remaining dust.

The Abita Springs, La.-based National Organization of Remediators and Mold Inspectors developed its procedures to give homeowners some assurance that they can get long-term relief, said Doug Hoffman, executive director of the organization.

“Prognosis without diagnosis is malpractice,” said Hoffman, who is one of the instructors at classes his group is giving around the state to introduce the program.

About a dozen state-licensed mold remediators and building contractors got instructions in such arcane topics as preserving enough of the drywall as legal evidence so that the homeowner won’t be precluded from suing the builder or drywall manufacturer.

“It’s not cheap,” Hoffman said – $86 to $96 per square foot for spraying a biocide formulated to penetrate walls and kill the bacteria that cause the problem, then ripping out all the bad drywall, vacuuming out all the possibly contaminated dust and retreating with the biocide.

After that, he said, the drywall remediator does annual checkups and puts a monitor that records temperature and humidity to make sure the homeowner doesn’t leave the house without air conditioning – a sure way to trigger a relapse.

“It loves moisture,” Hoffman said. “Anytime you have moisture in the environment, you’ve got a problem.”

Della White, co-owner of Fort Myers-based Environmental Services Group, said she thinks the training and certification will make the process of drywall remediation more certain for homeowners and the people doing the work.

“I think it’s going to provide us with a path to follow,” she said.

Florida Grandfather Clause Eases the Process

Getting licensed in Florida as a Mold Assessor or Remediator might just be the best move you could make toward entrepreneurial independence. Want to work for yourself and help people solve real indoor environmental problems? This could be your ticket to success and financial freedom.

When the Florida Mold Licensing was adopted, and is now in place, there was excitement around the probability that many contractors, home inspectors, home remodelers, and IAQ inspectors would rush to the table to get their piece of the pie. And by implementing a way for those professionals to use their experience or training to “grandfather in”, thus avoiding a more difficult process for licensure later, Florida set the pace for other states that will, no doubt, follow their lead. Florida’s Governor Crist wanted to protect an existing toxic mold industry and avoid disrupting business while offering an opportunity to the diligent professional to get licensed with ease. He accomplished his purpose.

For the next few months, Best Training School is offering a training program that meets all of the grandfathering requirements for Florida Mold Licensure. The CMA/CMR class gives the student 32 hours of assessment/remediation training (the law requires a minimum of 30 hours for remediators), an opportunity at the end of each class to sit for the NORMI CMA or CMR Proctored Examination (thus meeting the nationally recognized certification requirement) and leave the classroom with everything he/she needs to apply for the Florida Mold license. What a great deal!

However, the window is closing. The grandfather option is only open until March 1, 2011 and then, after that, licensure will be much different and many professionals will not qualify for licensure.

Now is the time to get trained and certified. The class schedule at www.BestTrainingSchool.com/cma.php has been set and classes are now being offered in Orlando, Ft. Lauderdale, Ft. Myers, Tampa, Jacksonville, and Pensacola. But, some will wait. Why? It is hard to say why but we know this for sure–soon the door will be closed and the opportunity of a lifetime, the opportunity to own and run your own business, the opportunity to help hundreds of thousands of people who suffer every day with indoor environmental issues will come to an end for many. Take advantage of this opportunity today and call 888.856.4803 to reserve your seat. Don’t be left out…it’s too good an investment to ignore.

Chinese Drywall Training now Available

Best Training School is now offering training on interim controls and the remediation of Chinese Drywall, beginning in October. This training will help hundreds, even thousands, of homeowners and professionals who are currently dealing with this issue.  “We have been studying the Contaminated Drywall issue (formally referred to as ‘Chinese Drywall’, ‘Defective Drywall’, ‘Imported Drywall’ and ‘Corrosive Drywall’) for nearly two years. Our team of expert researchers, engineers, construction professionals, microbiologists and remediation specialists started in the summer of 2008 when clients first called NORMI looking for solutions. There has been a lot of ‘misinformation’ dispensed and ‘gimmickry’ solutions offered to address these problems but finally, we have found the solution and are proud to partner with Best Training School to train professionals on the assessment and remediation of Contaminated Drywall (CDW).

The problem first required intense scrutiny and investigation through a variety of disciplines. We have looked at the building science aspects of the problem, IICRC S-520 and NYC Guidelines for potential mitigation/remediation solutions, microbiological analysis utilizing DNA sampling and straight microscopy to help us identify a more holistic approach to the problem and relied on our intense construction background to propose a solution. But that wasn’t enough! Once you have a proposed solution, a mitigation/remediation protocol that works, how can you find someone who is well-trained AND insured to actually perform the work?

Now we have accomplished our purposes: provide a program that really 1) identifies the problem, through proper assessment, 2) effectively removes the source of the problem, through remediation protocols that are holistic, effective and specific to the unique job and 3) provides the customer with a guarantee that the problems WILL NOT return, a warranty aspect absent from many proposed solutions.
Well-trained, highly skilled, licensed and insured professionals for assessment AND remediation with protocols that work—come see for yourself at the next Best Training School CDW Certification class near you!” Doug Hoffman–Executive Director of NORMI

THE MITIGATION/REMEDIATION TRAINING
The NORMI Certified CDW Remediator (CCDWR)—The NORMI Certified CDW Remediator is a fully licensed and insured construction professional who has met the stringent requirements associated with the mold remediation certification (NORMI Certified Mold Remediator) also offered by NORMI. Having been trained in the standard remediation protocols (IICRC S-500, IICRC S-520, NYC Guidelines, EPA, and others) the NORMI Certified CDWR fully understands how modifying existing cleaning, restoration, mitigation and remediation techniques accomplishes the overall goals of contaminated drywall mitigation/remediation. When implementing contaminated drywall mitigation/remediation the utilization of proper containment, establishing negative pressure, use of Personal Protection Equipment and chemical/mechanical sanitization techniques are vital to the successful project. The NORMI CDWR attends this training with a rich background of training and experience so projects can be initiated immediately upon completion of the course.

The ASSESSMENT TRAINING
The NORMI Certified CDW Assessor (CCDWA)—The NORMI Certified CDW Assessor is a fully licensed and insured professional trained in all aspects of IAQ-related and CDW assessment because, first and foremost, the issues related to corrosive drywall are indoor air quality problems. The “rotten-egg odors”, the VOCs, relative humidity anomalies, and surface contamination all affect indoor air quality and must, therefore, be fixed and continually managed. The assessment process identifies those factors contributing to the symptoms in that specific and unique project then proposes protocols that mitigate or remediate the problem. The solutions are specifically tailored to match the design, construction and nature of the problem. In some cases the contaminated drywall is asymptomatic and requires only the installation of IAQ management techniques, light mitigation and/or containment. In other cases, removal of the contaminated drywall is in order. Rather than taking a “let’s kill the flea with an elephant gun” approach, the NORMI Certified CDWA is trained to match the solution with the problem. There will be no “unnecessary” redundancy just to cover up or mask the problems. The problems are identified and protocols written to solve the problem at its source.

THE HEALTHIER HOME WARRANTY
The NORMI Healthier Home Warranty is the goal of all mitigation/remediation projects. A home that has been properly assessed and remediated qualifies for the ongoing warranty which guarantees to the homeowner, the problems were solved. Upon completion of the project the homeowner is presented with a NORMI Certificate of Sanitization as a third-party confirmation that all protocols were followed resulting in a post remediation verification that all levels of IAQ are in “expected/normal” ranges. The NORMI Certificate of Sanitization then becomes the basis for the ongoing warranty. Should the homeowner elect to continue this warranty, an annual compliance review is scheduled and ongoing IAQ management through IAQ monitoring and maintenance is implemented.

For more information on how this training and solution could help you, call the NORMI CDW Hotline at 877.251.2296 x 8911 or email support@normi.org

Certified Mold Assessor and Remediation Class in Florida

Excel Supplies in Fort Myers is hosting a NORMI Certifited Mold Assessor/Remediator class from September 14-17, 2010 at their location on 6301 Topaz Court, Ft. Myers, FL 33966. The class is 32 hours of training on toxic mold assessment, diagnosing of moisture problems, moisture planes, sanitization and remediation techniques and includes actual hands-on training in establishing containment, creating negative pressure and PPE. This comprehensive training is recommended for all mold professionals where they intend to be licensed or not.

This class has been touted by students as “the best and most practical mold class I’ve ever taken” and sets a standard in the industry because it is based on the accepted techniques recommended by NYC Guidelines, EPA, and IICRC. In fact, continuing education credits are offered to those who are already certified by IICRC or ACAC (formerly AmIAQC) and those who take the class are given an opportunity to take the proctored examination offered for NORMI Certification.

The State of Florida now offers a grandfather opportunity (through March 2011) for those who have received such training and certified by a nationally recognized organization (like NORMI and the ACAC) who also offers a proctored examination. Both organization provide proctored examinations to comply with this licensing requirement…the path is not difficult and Best Training School will assist anyone who is interested in pursuing Florida licensing. This class also prepares the student for licensing in Louisiana, Maryland, and Arkansa once the student completes other state licensing requirements.

NORMI, the National Organization of Remediators and Mold Inspectors, was recently granted CE Training Provider status by the State of Florida under the direction of the new Mold Related Services. Additionally, NORMI is currently a training provider for other states…for more information you may visit the website http://www.NORMI.org To become a Facebook fan of NORMI go to http://www.Fan.NORMI.org
